Comme Hold On to Your Hats () d'Al Jolson, Banjo Eyes était un événement. La légende de la comédie musicale Eddie Cantor revenait pour la première fois sur scène à Broadway depuis 1928, alors qu’il avait joué dans le musical à succès Whoopee! (). Comme le musical de Jolson, la présence de Cantor promettait d’être un succès, mais, comme Jolson, la santé de Cantor (et peut-être le temps froid de New York) l’a forcé à quitter le musical et à rentrer chez lui en Californie. Donc Banjo Eyes s'est arrêté en moins de quatre mois.
Bien que Cantor était connu sous le nom de "Banjo Eyes", le titre ne faisait pas référence à son personnage mais à un cheval de course parlant, joué en costume par l’équipe de vaudeville de Morton et Mayo.
